A milling machine is used to cut metal using either a fixed cutter or a movable cutter. With the fixed cutter the piece of work is moved into the cutter. With the movable cutter the piece of work is held in place, usually be some sort of a holding device and the cutter moves to it. This can be done vertically or horizontally. This is common equipment in many manufacturing shops. A small cnc milling machine is one of the machines with a computer numerical control.

CNC Milling Machine

This machine is pre-programmed with certain commands, called CNC, for specific types of cutting. It follows the commands from different codes, called G-instructions. There are many different sizes and types of milling machines with different drive power and spindle speed. Some can use only one machine tool, some several depending on the particular machine purchased.

Some of the machines are able to use software packages for designing which is very useful if the machine is purchased for a small shop or individual use. They can also be set for automatic operations if they have programmable capability. With certain additional software programs, the CNC codes can be changed.

CNC is an excellent tool which allows one to cut curves and other intricate patterns with very little trouble. Its automation makes the work more precise and relieves the operator from having to be in constant attendance. This has been found to be both a cost and labor saving device.

This type of machine is ideal for small shop manufacturers as it does not take up a lot of room. It does the same work as the larger machine but on a smaller scale. Many of the shop owners have found that this fits their needs exactly when they do not have to work with large pieces of metal.

Some larger shop owners are purchasing two or more of these machines so they can have several different types of cutting going on at the same time. This saves having to wait for one design to be finished before starting another. They have found that the way the machine is manufactured makes it ideal for their purpose and is an excellent finished product.

A basic type of CNC was worked on back in the 1940’s and, up until the incorporation of computer technology, G-codes were made on punched tape to direct the machines operation. The current G-code’s ability to easily relay commands to the machine has been a huge improvement. CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software packages have files that direct all the machine’s actions.

With this advanced technology it is possible to leave a machine running overnight with no one in attendance and not worry about something going wrong. There is an alarm system that will automatically call the mobile phone of whoever is in charge if something breaks down. If it is just a certain tool in the process, that is broke, n the machine will just shut down that part of the machine with the rest continuing their part of the operation. The small cnc milling machine is an excellent and worthwhile addition to any manufacturing operation.
