As its name suggests, a benchtop small milling machine is smaller than the larger, more sophisticated industrial models. It is a tool that resembles a drill and is used to shape metal, plastic, wood and other solid materials. It can be used on almost any surface whether it is flat, curved and irregularly shaped. And, milling machines are powered manually or mechanically. The newer models use CNC (computer numerical control) and require minimal human intervention. A milling machine uses a rotating cutter that moves along the table and cuts sideways as well as in and out.

Benchtop mills and cutting tools are extremely lightweight, compact and relatively inexpensive. Even so, they get the job done with accuracy and precision. Benchtop models powered via CNC are wonderful tools because of their portability and excellent performance. They are perfect for prototyping and for any light duty industrial work. Many manufacturers, both large and small, have gone to benchtop mills for their lighter production needs.

Benchtop mills have many outstanding features that are standard or optional. They only weigh about 260 pounds so that they can be used on almost any surface table. They often contain identical ball bearing components to those found on larger and more expensive milling machines. Their design is compact but is professional in appearance and performance. They are very accurate pieces of equipment that can be depended on to complete assigned tasks with precision and efficiency. They can perform contouring with a 3 dimensional effect and most models contain their own cooling system, making them safe and secure. CNC benchtop models can be operated from a desktop PC which contains graphic-specific software. Their digital controller has specialized sensors built right into it. And, finally, most benchtop manufacturers offer limited and extended warranties and provide excellent 24-hour customer service.

Many home hobbyists select a benchtop milling machine for their small projects. With this amazing machine, they are able to easily work with many different kinds of materials such as wood, plastic, aluminum, brass and steel. Even though benchtop machines are small, they perform big! Anyone just beginning to use milling machines will find that benchtop models are an easy way to get started.
